Voltage Regulator
How do I test a voltage regulator in a 1976 XLCH Sportster with a mechanical voltage regulator?
I just had the generator yesterday my 1976 rebuilt sports that currently put his charging the battery and my not be the voltage regulator? How do I know? What should I do to solve this and / or how do I test the voltage regulator?
Herb is right. You need Flash (polarization) the generator. Just run a bridge between The "Bat" and "Gen" terminals on the regulator. (Alternatively you can jump from the pos + battery terminal on the generator terminal labeled "A") just touch the jumper cable for a second, you should hear a "click" on the generator when you do. That's all there. Your continued use of mechanical voltage regulator I suggest you switch to an electric regulator solid state cycle. The solid state controller that works much better and it is possible that the contacts of the mechanical age regulators to unite and burn up the battery and wiring. (which does not happen often, but it happens.) Moreover, often the problem was the mechanical regulators in the field. Check the bolts that hold the bike and make sure that there is corrosion between the regulator and the nut. The procedure monitoring and adjusting the time-dependent regulator has a regulator Bosch or Delco Remy and describe the procedure is beyond what I could post here. (s five pages in the Clymer manual.) Flash generator and see if it starts charging. If not, then get a Clymer manual or factory service manual and a regulator electric solid state cycle.
