Under the influence of its drive force, a snowmobile is moving at a constant velocity along a horizontal patch of snow. When the drive force is shut off, the snowmobile coasts to a halt. The snowmobile and its rider have a mass of 135 kg. Under the influence of a drive force of 230 N, it is moving at a constant velocity whose magnitude is 6.04 m/s. The drive force is then shut off. Find (a) the distance in which the snowmobile coasts to a halt and (b) the time required to do so.
Since it is moving at a constant speed the drag forces must equal the driving force. Once the motor is shut off this force will then slow the machine down to a stop. I am assuming that the major drag forces are frictional and not dependent on velocity in some way.
F = m*a
230 = 135*a
a = 230/135 = 1.84 m/s^2
v = a*t
t = v/a
t = 6.04/1.84 = 3.283 seconds
s = (1/2)a*t^2 = (1/2)*1.84*(3.283)^2
s = 9.91 meters
(a) The coasting distance is 9.91 meters
(b) The stopping time is 3.283 seconds
