Hiking/snowboarding anywhere near San Diego?

I am thinking about moving to San Diego in a few years to get away from the rain in Seattle but I don’t want to move there unless there are some places to go hiking and snowboarding within a three-hour radius. If there aren’t, can someone tell me what part of California has trees and mountains and what coastal cities are close to that?

I’d verify the above information…lots and lots of hiking within the county and Afoot and Afield in San Diego is the book you need to get (by Jerry Schad). You’ll be able to see the variety of hikes that are here from the book. There’s a whole variety of hiking here…on the beach, coastal canyons, mountains with pine trees, oaks and other trees, and the desert – Anza Borrego has great desert camping and hiking. Esp good to camp/hike in the desert during the winter and spring months, so there’s never a season when you’re stuck indoors. Definitely nothing in our county like the Pacific Northwest but a lot of different ecosystems here.

The Big Bear area (north of Riverside/San Bernardino) is about 2 hours drive north with skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Lots of people will also do about a 6 – 7 hour drive up hwy 395 to Mammoth to a really prime winter snow area.

I know many people in San Diego who are former Seattlites and I don’t know one who’s gone back to Seattle, so this must work for them!
