How important is the layer of "base"?

Im going on a trip soon and snowboard jacket pants oh so important, sunglasses and gloves. Now I'm wondering what I should take everything down? I live in the south where the temperature rarely falls below 55 during the day and I go out with a pair of jeans. Temperatures of 20 degrees is another story! Can I go out with some wore jeans under the pants snowboard? Regular long-sleeved shirts long to work? About the only regular cotton socks? Thank you!
