Where can I read or download a car repair manual online for FREE?

I have a 1976 Chevy Nova with a straight 6 (whatever that is, my brother always tells me! LOL) and I really need the manual to make some simple repairs.

Check with your local public library. Our repair offers online data from two sources – a call from EBSCO that can be read from home by entering your library card number online, and better known ALLDATA that are only accessible in the library. But both are free! In addition, you can probably go to a Chilton or Haynes of the library.
